Dr. Sommer is Knight Distinguished Professor of Public Policy Emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. A Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, he served on the Board of Directors of Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Society.  He is a member of the Royal Society of New Zealand and the New Zealand Association of Scientists.  He is Survey Director for the 1996 and 2008 Surveys of Scientists and Technologists.
